You need an Enrolled Agent (cheapest solution for representation), not an attorney unless the issue is corporations, estates or criminal in nature.
You generally cannot stop interest. Some penalties can be waived simply by asking.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse, and ignorance of the inadequate withholding from your paychecks is inexcusable, indefensible. You control withholding by what you put in your W-4. Every checkstub shows the amount of withholding. Interest is statutory. You stop it by paying off the debt.
Can go by yourself or with enrolled agent or tax attorney. Who prepared your tax return? They may be willing to advise you. You can enter an installment payment plan with IRS and start addressing your problem.
The only way to stop the interest is to pay (all) the money.
A big family will cost more (to feed, clothe, house, etc.) than they will save in taxes.
Exactly what are your “issues”? You owe tax and can’t pay it? How much?
What is your issue? Have you filed your taxes and now owe? Is IRS sending you notice of your balance due? Is IRS requesting full payment or installment agreement? How the heck is it you can’t afford to pay IRS but will be able to afford a lawyer? Don’t make sense.
Call IRS at 1-800-829-0922 or 1-800-829-7650 to work out a payment plan. How much do you owe? Less than $1,499.99 if so IRS will accept a minimum monthly payment of $25.00 per month. $1500.00 to 3000.00 IRS will accept $50 per month. Over $3,000.00 to $24,999.00 divide the amount you owe by 60 months and the result is the minimum IRS will accept per month. If you just can’t afford to pay IRS then visit IRS website http://www.irs.gov and download Form 433-F and have it completed and ready to provide the CSR the information, so they can determine you monthly payment.
No way to stop the interest, other than full paying the amount you owe. Call IRS don’t ignore IRS or you will end up having your wages levied, bank account levied etc.
Good luck
“Tax Issues” doesn’t describe what the problem is. Whatever it is, if you ignore it, IRS will make attempts to resolve it without your help and you won’t like how that works out. What is the problem?
Go to the appointment. At anytime you can ask for the appointment/interview to be stopped and say you want to make a new appointment and want representation. The rule for this is in Publication 1.
If you can pay your taxes within 60 months through an installment agreement you do not have anything to worry about and do not waste you money on hiring representation.
If you know about your tax return, and agree to what IRS says you owe, then you can do it yourself.
If you have a reason, why you could not pay the tax due, then request a waiver for penalty. Write it and take with you.
If you can not pay all the amount at one time, ask for short term payment plan or installment plan.
You will still be charged interest and penalty for late payment.
